EPIRB - Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons.

The EPIRB is a small , Self Containes Battery Operated Radio Transmitter with Operation life of about 48 hrs.

Purpose :-

  • It is a secondary means of ship to shore Distress alerting system
  • To determine the position of person , Survival Craft or the vessel in Distressduring SAR Operations.

Type od EPIRB and GMDSS Sea Area used :-

  1. 156.525 MHz (VHF ch 70 ) - Sea area A1 only
  2. 406 MHz ( COSPAS SARSAT ) - All 4 sea areas.
  3. 121.5 MHz enables SAR aircraft to home on the EPIRB

It is a watertight and Buoyant mounted in a special float free bracket usually on either of the bridge wing or compass deck . the hydrostatis release in the bracket is designed to release the beacon when the ship sinks, on a depth of about 4 metres.
In distress situations EPIRB are activated either manually or automatically and start transmitting signals.
An EPIRB alert indicates that a person is in distress , may not have receiving facilities , the vessel may be abandoned and the survivors may only have portable VHF radios to communicate.
EPIRB signals ( Except VHF EPIRB ) are received only by Shore Station.

COSPAS SARSAT EPIRB :-

The system uses several satellites at a low polar orbit of 850-1000 Kms.

The satellite are designed to receive on 406.025 MHz.
The system employs Doppler Shift Principles, Using the relative motion between a satellite and an activated beacon to calculate the location of that beacon. once a beacon signal has been received it is relayed by a satellite to a specialised ground station called a Local User Terminal ( LUT ) . and thence Mission Control Center ( MCC )
